Saint John School Academics

Our Curriculum

Pre-K3 and 4 Programs

Pre-K3 and 4 Programs

At Saint John school we follow the curriculum provided by the Diocese of Norwich. You can find those policies and guidelines on their webpage here. Our teachers also implement Fundations and Heggerty curriculums in order to provide more ways to learn. These extra curriculums are in line with what is used by most local public schools. Our teachers also utilize supplemental materials such as IXL, Boddle, Starfall and Mystery Science in order to provide a fun and entertaining way for our children to enhance their learning both in and out of the classroom! For children who have an Individualized Education Program, Lexia is a great supplemental resource for them to use and for their teachers to better help them learn!

Pre-K3 and 4 Programs

Saint John School is excited to announce that we have a Pre-Kindergarten program in our elementary school! Our Pre-K program allows parents to bring their children to school 2-5 days a week so that they can participate in school activities and begin getting accustomed to being away from home. These classes cover shapes, numbers, letters, colors, pattern recognition, social-emotional skills, both fine and gross motor skills and introducing the concepts of sharing and taking turns. They have a nap time daily after lunch, and are provided with a cot. Parents must provide their child with a pillow and blanket/sheet, or a sleep mat.

Specials Program

Specials Program

Saint John School is very pleased to be able to provide our students with Specials Classes! Students in grades Pre-K 3 through 8th grade are scheduled for art class, music class, and physical education each week. Students in Kindergarten to 3rd grade have Spanish lessons once a week while our students in grades 4 through 8 have Spanish lessons twice a week. Technology lessons for grades K - 8 are also offered once a week. Our Specials teachers are trained to provide varying levels of activities for each class in order to promote learning and generate interest for each of the subjects.

Technology

Specials Program

Our children in grades K-8 have access to Chromebooks each week. They are used to aid in their education to learn about using technology in today's world! Students also have a technology class every week where they learn how to type and how to operate a computer. They have access to iPads as well, in order to learn how to operate a tablet. Our technology classroom also has a 3D printer which the older students can learn how to operate. Our classrooms also come equipped with Smart Boards or a television to aid in learning. Some of our teachers will use Google Classroom to assign homework and other assignments.

Library

Our school is equipped with a library that contains an extensive selection of texts in a wide variety of publication dates in order to teach our children how to conduct research with physical books besides being instructed on how to do digital research. We also have a Children's library that contains a wide variety of children's books for their teachers to read to them in class. The students are allowed to check out books when they would like, but all books must be returned to our library. Our library is also used as a meeting space and a classroom space, as we have tables and chairs set up for the children to use as well as the staff or any visitors who wish to host a presentation.

Community

We love doing things together as a school! It helps bring the students closer together and creates a learning environment that has the children excited to go to school each day! We have a Buddy program, where an older class is paired with a younger class and they do activities together, like reading stories or doing craft projects, and the older kids are able be role models and set examples for the younger kids. We also have a Student of the Month award that goes to the student that the principal decides best represents that month's virtue. We also hold fundraisers and events throughout the year to have our students engage with our community!
