St John School School is very pleased to be able to offer a Specials Program for our students. We have five total regular specials: Art, Music, Physical Education, Spanish and Technology. Each class from Kindergarten through 8th grade has all five of these classes every week. our Pre-K program has Art, Music and Physical Education class each week.
Our art curriculum helps students develop creativity, confidence, and an appreciation for the arts while learning to communicate ideas visually. Students get to use many art mediums, such as pastels and different types of paints, different types of paper, markers and ink pens, as well as many others. They also learn about artists and art styles, as well as art elements and techniques!
Our music curriculum builds foundational musical skills while fostering creativity, teamwork, and a lifelong enjoyment of music! The students study elements of music, such as beat, rhythm and tone, as well as the history and culture of music by learning about composers and their styles. The younger children focus more on moving their bodies to beats and beginning to experiment with classroom instruments, while our older children focus more on music culture and music literacy.
New for our 2026-27 school year, we will be introducing Band for grades 4-8 and recorder lessons for Grade 3! We are very excited to be introducing these new programs and know our students will enjoy it.
Our physical education curriculum supports the development of healthy bodies, positive social skills, and lifelong habits of physical activity. The students use teamwork to play in team games, as well as developing their personal skills in our game-based physical education program. When the weather is nice the students are able to go play outside in our full-sized soccer field. They have a wide variety of physical activities to do rain or shine!
Our Spanish program introduces students to the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures through engaging, age-appropriate activities. It fosters curiosity about other cultures while building a foundation in language skills and global awareness. Students begin taking Spanish class in Kindergarten, where they learn basics like numbers, letters, colors and days of the week, and the classes progress from there. Our middle school students study more in-depth about the language and culture, as well as begin to speak fluently in Spanish to prepare them for High School Spanish cirriculums.
Our Technology program introduces students to digital tools and computational thinking while promoting safe and responsible use of technology. It's able to build foundational skills for using technology confidently, creatively, and responsibly in school and beyond. All of our students learn computer skills through games and introductory and advanced programs on both Chromebooks and iPads. They also have access to a 3D printer to let their creativity blossom!
